How to practise riichi mahjong scoring

Goal

Read the hand, round wind, seat wind, dealer status, win method and dora indicator, then work out han, fu and points. Use “Check answers” to see whether you were right and read the breakdown, then “Next question” to continue.

Practice levels

  1. Intro: han and fu are given. Enter the points.
  2. Basic: the yaku are listed. Enter fu and points.
  3. Advanced: the yaku are not listed. Use the hand and its situation to work out han, fu and points.

Rules on this page

Ippatsu, ura dora, haitei, houtei, rinshan kaihou, chankan, double riichi and honba are not included.

All levels use the rules on this page. The level changes which information is given and which values you enter.

  1. Red dora are not used.
  2. Kiriage mangan applies: 30 fu 4 han and 60 fu 3 han are scored as mangan.
  3. There is no kazoe yakuman. Hands with 11 or more han are scored as sanbaiman.
  4. A pair that is both the round wind and the seat wind is worth 2 fu.
  5. Open tanyao is allowed. Tanyao can score in an open hand.
  6. Atozuke is allowed. A yaku need not be guaranteed by the first call, as long as the winning hand has one.
  7. Yakuman hands are not included.

Counting fu and han

Add the han from the yaku and one han for each dora. Dora are not yaku. Some yaku lose han when the hand is open; others require a closed hand. The breakdown shows the yaku, their han and the dora.

Normally, start with 20 base fu. Add 10 for closed-hand ron, 2 for tsumo, 2 for a value pair, and 2 for a kanchan, penchan or tanki wait. Pinfu tsumo and chiitoitsu use the fixed fu values below.

A triplet of simples (2–8) is worth 2 fu when open or 4 when concealed; a triplet of terminals or honors is worth 4 or 8. A kan of simples is worth 8 fu when open or 16 when concealed; a kan of terminals or honors is worth 16 or 32. A triplet completed by ron counts as open for fu.

Round the fu total up to the next multiple of 10. Pinfu tsumo stays at 20 fu, and chiitoitsu stays at 25. An open pinfu-shaped hand won by ron is adjusted from 20 to 30 fu.

Calculate basic points as fu × 2^(han + 2). Mangan uses 2000 basic points for a 5-han hand, a hand whose calculated basic points reach 2000, or a kiriage mangan hand. Use 3000 for haneman at 6–7 han, 4000 for baiman at 8–10 han, and 6000 for sanbaiman at 11 or more han.

For ron, multiply basic points by 4 for a non-dealer or by 6 for the dealer. For non-dealer tsumo, each of the other two non-dealers pays basic points × 1, and the dealer pays × 2. For dealer tsumo, each of the three non-dealers pays × 2. Round each payment up to the next 100 points.

Scoring table source

The scoring table has been checked against the table in the official M.LEAGUE rules, but this page uses different rules in some respects, including no red dora.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I practise just the points?
A. Choose Intro to see the han and fu and enter only the points. Basic asks for fu and points; Advanced asks for han, fu and points.
Q. Why is a non-dealer ron at 30 fu 4 han worth 8000 points?
A. This page uses kiriage mangan. Both 30 fu 4 han and 60 fu 3 han count as mangan: 8000 points for non-dealer ron or 12000 for dealer ron.
Q. Do I round up chiitoitsu from 25 fu?
A. No. Chiitoitsu stays at 25 fu, rather than rounding up to 30. Pinfu tsumo also stays at its fixed value of 20 fu.
Q. Is the dora indicator itself the dora?
A. Dora is the next tile after the indicator. Numbered suits run from 1 to 9 and back to 1. Winds cycle East → South → West → North → East; dragons cycle White → Green → Red → White. Each dora in the hand adds one han, but dora alone do not provide a yaku.
Q. For tsumo, do I enter the total?
A. Enter each player's payment, not the total. For non-dealer tsumo, enter one non-dealer's payment and the dealer's payment separately. For dealer tsumo, enter the amount each player pays.
